Speaking Of Varanids…

23 08 2009

Good tidings and well-wishes!

I’ve recently discovered an excellent herpetology/paleo blog entitled “The Reptipage” written by “Jurassosaurus”, aka: “Jura”. At present, I have yet to read most of its front page posts thoroughly, given my preparations for the rapid advent of the upcoming fall semester here at MCC. However, I did manage to read this fascinating post about the anatomical and biochemical makeup of Varanus komodoensis bites. I don’t wish to steal the Jura’s thunder, so I won’t go into great detail here. But I will say that this article explains, among many other things, why Komodo dragons have such thick gums and that the “bite and release” hunting style so commonly attributed to them is, in all probability, a myth. But don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself!

May the fossil record (and the rest of the natural world) continue to enchant us all!
